Microchipping for Pets

Implanting a rice grain-sized chip provides your dog or cat with a lifetime of permanent ID.

Microchipping is a tool that helps us recover lost dogs and cats. Every year, countless dogs and cats go unclaimed in shelters. By microchipping them, you give your dog or cat the best chance of making it back home to you if they ever get lost. This one-time implantation can provide you with a lifetime of peace of mind.

Why should I microchip my cat or dog?

Microchipping has become a very popular and safe way to permanently identify your dog or cat and you as the owner in the unfortunate case that they get lost. Microchipping involves the placement of a small electronic chip the size and shape of a piece of rice just under the skin in the neck area. A needle is used to inject the chip. The injection is comparable to a regular vaccine injection.

How does it work?

If your dog or cat becomes lost and is transported to a humane society or veterinarian, they will be able to scan your dog or cat for the chip. The scanner is similar to a scanner found in the grocery store. The chip is connected to a pet recovery database with the contact information you provide when registering it. Then, they're able to contact you and reunite you with your dog or cat.

Why does my dog or cat need a collar if they have a microchip?

In addition to microchips, we also recommend a collar with up-to-date identification, which can quicken the process of your lost cat or dog returning home. However, we don’t recommend relying on them as your dog or cat’s only method of identification. Collars can fall off, be removed, or wear away over time. Dog and cat owners can also forget to update contact information on collars and tags. Microchipping is the best way to provide your dog or cat with permanent identification.
